Each year I take students to California as part of the International Experience Module. In their final year studying Music with Teaching we have the opportunity to put all the theory into practice - in real life. The class is never the same and every year the students decide what they would like to do. This year's plan will involve a lot of fun and a lot of ukuleles! We will be hosted by two primary schools where we will give a series of workshops and we will also be teaching the teachers who work over the summer at the UCLA UniCamp so they can run their own ukulele workshops next summer.
I am no bystander in this class, nor am I the traditional teacher. I am as much learner and team-member as the students enrolled on the module decide I should be. -and that means I fundraise too! On the trip I will be there to drive, to facilitate, to encourage, and to make music.
What do I look forward to most? Witnessing these students meet and teach young and old, and know that they devised and carried out this trip. It is wonderful to truly be in charge of your learning, and that's where some of the most meaningful accomplishments in learning (and in life) happen.
The dream is to be able to leave each school with enough ukuleles for an entire class of children to use and that's where the goal comes in. £15 buys a ukulele that we can give to someone so they can keep the music going.
